Long journeys tire children out, and a nap can make a real difference to the mood on arrival. Sleeping upright in a strange seat is not always easy, though. A small pillow and a soft blanket can turn an ordinary seat into a cosy corner. Both take up little room in a bag. They also bring a little of home along for the ride.
Choosing what to pack
Pick a pillow that is small enough to fit in a rucksack and soft enough to squash flat. A child's own pillow from home is even better, because it smells familiar. Choose a blanket that is light and easy to fold. Soft cotton or fleece suits most journeys, since it is warm without being bulky.
Let the children choose the colours and patterns. A blanket with a favourite animal or a bright stripe feels personal, and children look after what they love. Put a name label on each one so nothing gets left behind on a train. Explain that these are for resting, not for playing. A short talk beforehand makes it easier to settle later.
Think about where the children will sit when they doze. A window seat gives something to lean on, and a pillow can be tucked between the child and the side of the seat. Make sure nothing hangs in the way of the aisle or a door. Comfort should never get in the way of common sense.
Establish a small ritual before the nap. A quiet song, a gentle story or a short pause without screens tells the body it is time to rest. Dim the light if you can, or shade the window with a jumper. A calm start makes the nap deeper and more refreshing.
When the nap is over, let the children wake slowly. Sleepy children can be grumpy, so do not rush them with questions or plans. A drink and a quiet moment by the window help them return to the world. Fold the blanket and pillow away together, so they are easy to find next time. A little comfort on the way makes the whole journey feel kinder.
